    • Yes! Very much like that, and utterly inflexible. Even with copious dubbin, the leather never really approached anything that could be described as soft. I even warmed a tin over a stove before applying it once, to see if it would have more softening effect in liquid form. I don’t recall that it did. Interestingly, you can still get something very like this traditional style new: Galibier Super Guides were the ultimate Alpine boots when I started out, and they’re still available (eg here: http://mountaineering-boots-shop.com/en/welted-construction/12-galibier-super-guide.html ), but I have no idea who buys them.
